Letter to Donors
Dear Sir or Madam,
The University of Warsaw Library (BUW) is the main library of the University of Warsaw, one of the three greatest research and university collections in Poland and frequently visited public library of Warsaw. The edifice opened in 1999, awarded in competitions for its architectural and functional value, located in the heart of Powiśle close to the main campus of the University of Warsaw at Krakowskie Przedmieście, often called the “energy of the capital” and “the miracle on the Vistula”, is one of the most successful Polish investments of the last 25 years.
The way of shaping the space, the organization of collections and services allow us to put into effect the popular idea of an open library, where the reader’s contact with the book is not limited by spatial or organizational barriers. Readers have a direct, the so-called free access to more than 500 thousand volumes of books and periodicals. With a population of over 60 thousand students and researchers, the academic community of the University of Warsaw can study more than a hundred courses, having collections of over 6 million books and periodicals (including more than 3 million collections at 43 UW faculty libraries) at their disposal and access to rich electronic resources, including collections of the digital UW library (e-bUW), over 175 thousand titles of books and periodicals, and 130 full-text databases.
In order to maintain a high standard of library services, work comfort and leisure, and to provide an interesting offer of cultural, scientific and popular events to the general public, in particular the University’s academic community, additional financial resources are needed, apart from the budget subsidy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
We invite you, both individuals, as well as companies and institutions, to support our ongoing and planned projects. We encourage you to participate in the implementation of both long-term investment activities related to the building and BUW gardens, in the maintenance of library collections, as well as the organization of current events, including conferences, meetings, exhibitions, concerts and festivals. We would also like to invite you to take part in multiple original projects, which have been carried out for many years, namely in the “Book with recommendation” project or in biennial contemporary art auctions for BUW. We are also open to other scopes and forms of cooperation proposed by you.
We hope that cooperation with us will bring both sides not only tangible effects, but also a great deal of satisfaction.
We invite you to cooperation!
BUW Management and Employees
