In our Library, users have free access to books and serials located in open stacks. Holdings are divided into subject areas, according to the Library of Congress Classification schedule. In this part you can find most books published after 1980, along with others, which are important to particular branches of knowledge. Holdings also include frequently used serials (placed in alphabetical order in the specific subject area). Holdings, on the first and second level are divided into eight subject areas, .

More information about the classification you will find at the pages of subject areas.

Items are marked with colored labels – alphanumeric call numbers (letter and number combinations) are specific to each item and begin with the subject area symbol, e.g.:

BD233 .T37 1991

PQ8180.17.A73 A8165 1994

Red label means that a book can be used on the premises only; blue label means that you can check a book out.In open stacks you can take a book from the shelf without filling in a requisition form, but please do not return it to the shelf.

On the second level there is also a Textbook Collection. These books are lent only to UW students.
