Your PhD with BUW

As a PhD student, you are entitled to borrow a maximum of 20 books for up to 90 days. You can also utilize online resources, such as databases, e-books, and e-journals subscribed to by the University of Warsaw, the UW Institutional Repository, and the Crispa digital library. The Primo multi-search engine and the list of available databases will help you to search them.

How to deposit a publication in the Institutional Repository of the University of Warsaw.

A workshop presenting the benefits of archiving publication output in the UW Institutional Repository and introducing the principles of searching and depositing publications in the university repository.

Scientific Publishing for Beginners

Participants will gain knowledge of the scientific publishing process.

    • What is a scientific publication, and what are its forms: article, chapter, monograph, preprint.
    • What should the author consider when choosing a journal?
    • Publishing models (subscription, hybrid, open access).
    • What are bibliometric indicators and journal lists (Impact Factor / CiteScore / Ministry score).
    • Bibliographic databases and journal indexes: a brief overview.
    • Predatory journals and false indicators.
    • What can be found on the publishers’ websites (Elsevier, Springer, MDPI).
    • Good publishing practices (COPE-Committee on Publication Ethics, ICMJE-International Committee of Medical Journal Editors).

Publishing agreements and copyright
    • What is a publishing agreement, and what does it usually include?
    • Differences between copyright transfer and licensing.
    • How to read agreements – what to look for.
    • Practical tips: negotiability, alternative models.

Participants will gain an understanding of the basic principles of copyright law that are necessary when signing a publishing contract.

Licenses and open access (Open Access)

Participants will gain knowledge of open access publishing.

    • Open Access models: gold, green, hybrid.
    • Creative Commons licenses – an overview of the basic types.
    • Funding requirements for OA (e.g., NCN, Horizon Europe).
    • Institutional repositories and self-archiving.

Researcher identification

Participants will learn about the benefits of having an ORCID identifier and how to showcase their scientific achievements online.

    • The importance of accurate affiliation (for the author, the university, and evaluation).
    • ORCiD and social networking sites for scientists (ResearchGate, Academia).
    • How and where to share your outputs?

BUW Special Collection Departments offer

BUW Special Collection Departments offer:

  • expert consultations relating to the methodology of collection development and research, see: https://www.buw.uw.edu.pl/en/collections/special-collections/.
  • Workshops with original objects led by UW lecturers with the assistance and/or participation of Special Collection Departments staff.
  • Lectures featuring examples of original objects or specialised workshops on a given topic, prepared by the Special Collections Department staff.
  • Co-teaching classes conducted by doctoral students as part of their teaching practice. We will assist in selecting objects that illustrate a given topic, and supplement the lecture with necessary information, e.g. provenance.

The offer is available in Polish, English, and other languages (German, Belarusian, and Russian, depending on the Department).
