Potocki, that is who? Stanisław Kostka Potocki at the University of Warsaw on the occasion of 200th anniversary of his death

The University of Warsaw was established thanks to the involvement of many prominent statesmen, including Stanisław Kostka Potocki, Stanisław Staszic, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, Józef Sierakowski.

The 200th anniversary of Stanisław Kostka Potocki’s death is an occasion to recall him as the co-creators of our Alma Mater.
Best known for his political, collecting and intellectual activities, Stanisław Kostka Potocki was a man of comprehensive knowledge and broad horizons. The short spots prepared for this occasion signal those aspects of its activities that are directly related to the establishment of the University and the Library established by it.
Potocki, as the minister of the Government Commission for Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment, had a significant influence on their creation and functioning in the first years of their existence. To support the process of artistic education at the University, he inspired the creation of the Print Room in the Library.
The foundations of this collection of works of art on paper were the graphic collection of King Stanisław, August, supplemented with the gift of prints and drawings from the collection of Potocki himself.
The question “Potocki, that is, who?” it encourages not only to take a closer look at this multidimensional, historical figure. It makes us wonder who Potocki would be today and to what extent the field of his activity would differ from those of two centuries ago.

The University Library invited professors, museologists, and, of course, librarians to find answers to this question.
