June 1999

On the 11th of June 1999 took place a ceremony of official opening of  the new building of the University of Warsaw Library. A great splendor to the ceremony was added by the presence of  His Holiness, Pope John Paul II. The Pope consecrated the edifice. Guests assembled in the library were honored to listen to the speech of His Holiness. The text of speech is available here. The Pope put his name down in our Guest Book (see scan). Especially for that particular ceremony a hand-made armchair was prepared for our Guest. This armchair is being exhibited in the central point of the library – on level 2, at the top of the main stairs where John Paul II was sitting during his visit. Apart from the armchair, a memorial plaque made of bronze is set in the wall of the library – in the passage, on the right to the main entrance.
